CIVIC THEATRE ANNOUNCES AUDITIONS

A Celebration of the life of Sojourner Truth by Sandra Fenichel
Asher.
“This play celebrates the life of Sojourner Truth, from
the day she is sold away from her family, through her struggle
to free herself and her son, to her emergence as a popular and
respected advocate of abolition an women’s rights. Combining
her actual words with authentic slave songs and spirituals of
the time, this Joseph Campbell Award winning play has been honored
by the National Endowment for the Arts, the American Alliance
for Theatre and Education, and the IUPUI Children’s Theatre
Symposium and is currently cited in Outstanding Plays for
Young Audiences by ASSITEJ/USA. It is vibrant with TRUTH.
Auditions will be held at First United Methodist Church, 111
E. Michigan Ave. Battle Creek, across from the Justice Center
and City Hall, on Monday, January 14, and Tuesday, January 15
from 6:30-8:30PM.
Characters are Sojourner Truth, also referred to as “Belle”,
a young Sojourner (middle school age). The other characters
play multiple roles each and are as follows: First Woman-Black,
Second Woman-White, First Man-White, Second Man-White, and Third
Man Black. Since some persons will play several parts,

STEEL MAGNOLIAS
by Robert Harling
The action is set in Truvy's beauty salon in
Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are "anybody" come
to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle
(who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken,
wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the
town's rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, ("I'm not crazy, I've just
been in a bad mood for forty years"); an eccentric millionaire,
Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social
leader, M'Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in
town), is about to marry a "good ole boy." Filled
with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously
revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when,
in the second act, the spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) risks
pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their
mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying
strength—and love—which give the play, and its characters,
the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously
amiable company in good times and bad.

BCCT to Partner
with KCC on Home-Grown Fall Show |
Building on the success of last year's The
Diary of Anne Frank,
BCCT is once again partnering with KCC to produce a fall play.
In celebration of KCC's 50th Anniversary, the play chosen for
this fall is Can't Dance, by former KCC student and current instructor
Mike Love.
Can't Dance is the story of Missouri convenience store
owner Julie Ann Fontenot and her "off again - off again" relationship
with liquor salesman Jack Hastings. While Jack would like his weekly
sales visits to blossom into something more, Julie Ann is not so
sure. Adding to the story are Andy Levine, Jack's all-business
supervisor, and Prudence Golden, the small town's eccentric "veiled
prophet."
Performances are October 19, 20, 21 at 7:30pm and October 22 at
3:00pm at Binda Performing Arts Center on the campus of KCC.

BCCT Looking
for New Home |
After losing access to the Discovery Theatre when that property
was sold by the city to Gary Fields Comedy Club
at the end of the 2005 season, BCCT was left without a home.
During its ongoing search for a new permanent home, BCCT will
partner with other civic-minded local entities, such as Kellogg
Community College and the Veterans Administration, to bring the
Battle Creek community the live theatre opportunities it deserves.
Last fall, BCCT partnered with KCC for a successful run of The
Diary of Anne Frank, and hopes to continue that partnership this
fall with a new co-produced show. Look for more details later
in the summer.

to find out how you can help, please CONTACT
